Just watched Miyoko, a design biopic of the Japanese manga artist Abe Shinichi. The story begins in the 1970s and focuses on the artist’s muse (his girlfriend) Miyoko, who poses nude for him , taking photos he then draws from. He lacks inspiration, so he creates drama in his life to forms the plots of his manga strips around. I don’t want to give the whole story away, but basically he has an affair and then forces Miyoko into an affair, then goes insane and burns things and runs around with a saw and then stops  drawing for about 20 years and then starts again when he gets inspired by Miyoko, driving a car naked.  Phew. It’s a very dense film

I found the film quite pornographic and later found out that stills from the film can actually be found on ‘pink sites’ (sites for Japanese soft porn). The film was beautifully shot and well acted and if you are interested in manga then it is worth researching some of Abe Shinichi’s work, but as I had no real interest in this guy and his romantic exploits (and I missed the first 15 minutes of the film because I was waiting for the metro) I didn’t engage with the characters or really any of what was going on. Also people kept walking in and out of the cinema – once you’re in stay in! I DON’T CARE IF YOU NEED TO PEE YOU ARE DISTRACTING. Thank you.

Tomorrow I have reserved tickets for an ambitious five films! Five! We’ll see. I might not make it up for the early morning one. It’s by Francis Ford Coppola though, so it’ll definitely be in cinemas at some point. The award ceremony is on right now,  and I can’t dress up in a posh frock and go in because you need to be invited.  Boo.
